Discover these lesser-known but absolutely stunning destinations that most tourists miss when visiting Northern Pakistan.
Everyone heads to Hunza and Skardu, and for good reason. But some of the most rewarding trails in the country sit within a few hours of Islamabad, quiet and largely uncrowded. Here are five of our favourites, all of them real day hikes you can do on a weekend.
1. Panjpeer Rocks. Perched on the Danoi Ridge near Kotli Sattian, these stacked sandstone slabs feel like a natural balcony over the Potohar plateau. The short but steep climb through pine forest ends at a plateau with vertical drops and, on clear days, views all the way to the hills of Kashmir.
2. Noori Waterfall. Hidden along the Haro River in Haripur, Noori is a turquoise pool tucked inside a cove of rock. The walk in is barely fifteen minutes, which makes it perfect for beginners, and if you scramble a little further upstream you reach the even more dramatic black waterfall.
3. Shumber Waterfall. One of Islamabad’s best kept secrets, this seasonal fall in Shahdara Valley rewards a stream walk through big boulders with a sheer rock amphitheatre and a deep swimming pool. Go after rain, in the monsoon months, when the water is at its best.
4. Bruti Waterfall. On the eastern edge of the Margalla Hills, Bruti is a chain of spring-fed pools popular with local adventurers for cliff jumping. It links up with Trail 5 and the Monal road, so you can turn it into a longer loop if you want more of a workout.
5. Toli Peer. A little further out in Azad Kashmir, Toli Peer trades forest for vast open meadows that roll toward the horizon. A short walk from the upper parking brings you to a ridge-top shrine and some of the most photogenic pastureland in the region.
None of these need technical skill, but all of them reward an early start and a bit of preparation. Check the season, carry water, and download the track before you lose signal.
