The two highest peaks in the Ayubia National Park sit side by side. Here is how to choose between them for your first Galiyat trek.
If you are planning your first proper peak in the Galiyat, the choice usually comes down to two neighbours: Miranjani, the highest point in the region at almost 3,000 metres, and Mushkpuri, the friendly second-highest just behind it.
Mushkpuri is the gentler introduction. The popular trail from Dunga Gali climbs steadily through cedar and fir forest before opening into meadows carpeted with wild daisies. It is a favourite with families and first-timers, and the summit still delivers big views toward the Kashmir valley and, on clear days, Nanga Parbat.
Miranjani asks a little more of you. The climb from Nathia Gali is longer and steeper, with more sustained uphill and a wind-swept ridge near the top. The reward is a genuine 360-degree summit panorama and the quiet satisfaction of standing on the highest ground for miles.
Both are day hikes, both are well worth doing, and many people do them on consecutive days from a base in Nathia Gali. Our advice: warm up on Mushkpuri, then tackle Miranjani once your legs know what to expect.
Whichever you choose, start early, carry layers, and keep an eye on the weather. The cloud that makes these forests so beautiful can also close in quickly near the summit.
